FREE FOR ALL
This is a collection of portraits I have been taking of Mike Miyahira, my friend from college. This book has been put together in two sections: photos of the time in 1996 when the two of us traveled across America by car and photos of when Mike came to Japan in 1998. Of all the photographs I have taken of him, the ones I have selected here represent a condenstion of what I want to express. Born in New York in 1972, Mike is an American of Japanese descent and is an artist of both these worlds. He is a skater, a musician, and a talented illustrator. Rather than show him at work, I selected photographs that are mainly about the shape of his body, its movements, and its gestures. These images give me energy. I gain courage just by watching him run.
